Additional information about our hike. September 2019, my husband and I wanted to do Mount Whitney in a day. When we headed out at 3:30 a. m., after hiking a few miles, I knew I would not make it to the top. If I continued with him, I would only slow him down, so I turned around and headed back down to camp. The reason for this tidbit is because I am female. I choose to turn around in the dark and hike back down to the trailhead by myself. On this trail I felt safe. I passed several other hikers heading up to the Mountain and even 4:00 a. m. I was greeted with friendly, "good mornings" or other greetings. Later that day, I thought I would surprise my husband. I decided to hike up to Lone Pine Lake to meet him. Again this portion was by myself. Along the way I passed a few people, and several people passed me. The trail was well populated. Everyone was friendly and happy to take a break to share stories or take pictures. There were others who you knew "meant business" or the agony on their face told their story of sore feet; for them, you just give a kind or reassuring smile.
