As far as the living conditions are concerned, it varies hugely where you are staying. When you're staying in private accommodation it's up to you to contact and haggle with your landlord/lady when maintenance needs doing. You will find older houses with a little character are perhaps a little colder and are more prone to needing work done, whereas modern builds are a little more sterile though will be warmer etc. It depends completely upon the place, start looking a little while before you're in need of a new flat or house as there's always quite a bit of competition from other students. At the same time - don't over think this, have fun! I lived with a range of different people and always loved it. Sharing accommodation will always be a colourful time for you.
