The demographic is clearly younger, independent travelers for this type of experience. I would bring a solid lightweight rain jacket (midweight for the cooler weather in Xela). I would try to put the hiking tours a day into our stays. We had the Yaxha tour on the same morning as the flight into Flores and the Pacaya Volcano tour for our first morning in Antigua. Having a quiet day to relax would have been much better. One thing worked out really well. On our first day in Guatemala City, I made a point to get a local SIM and a data plan for my phone. This was one of the best decisions as it made it easy to do a few things - research the different places were were visiting, call and text to the US, and stay in touch with my son in Guatemala. The hotel front desk wasn't too helpful but they did direct me to Centro Comercial Los Proceres, a nearby shopping mall in Zona 10. In one of the stores on the first level, I bought one sim card for my son and one for myself. 30 days of 4G internet service and 7 days of calls and SMS to the US for Q160 each ($23 USD).

We returned at sunset to watch the bats fly from the entrance. We ventured in the other direction into town. There was plenty to see but ultimately, I didn't feel comfortable enough to buy anything or eat outside of the restaurant at our accommodations. Antigua From Lanquín, we traveled on to Antigua. Unlike the previous shuttles, this was large van shared with 20+ others. At 9 hours, this was simply too uncomfortable for my family. We weren't able to sit together and it was a much younger group of travelers. I would recommend a private shuttle or at least smaller group. The old colonial city was everything I remembered. Tourism has definitely taken hold and there are plenty of places – old buildings, restaurants, cafes and shops – to explore. We stayed for 4 nights. On one day, we took a morning tour to Pacaya Volcano. In comparison to Yaxha and Tikal, this was a strenuous hike but it is described as one of the more accessible volcanoes. Another day we took a mountain bike tour of the Filadelfia Finca.

In Antigua, we were blocked again, but this time the bank said that the card was reported as unreadable. Here, we were actually only trying the same ATM multiple times. Had we tried a different ATM, we might have been fine. My advice is to notify your bank of your travel dates before you leave, get some quetzals to last you a few days before you arrive, try to keep a couple days of quetzals with you when this go wrong, and be sure to have your bank phone number close at hand. Our bank is a credit union and they do not charge any foreign ATM fees and give the best exchange rates. There was a few hiccoughs but this turned out to be the most economical and convenient way to go. If you are traveling in or out of Antigua or Guatemala City, plan on huge amounts of traffic and significant smog. Depending on the time of day, it can easily add one hour or more to your travel time. One thing I would change would be the shared transportation between Lanquín and Antigua. It was just too uncomfortable for too long for my family.
