Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, with its ancient rainforests and alpine heaths, is home to the world-famous Overland Track and iconic Cradle Mountain. Part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the park is one of the state's most special places, where ancient pines fringe glacial lakes and icy streams cascade down rugged mountains. The vegetation is rich and diverse including grassland, rainforest and many ancient plants such as the long-lived and endemic King Billy pine and the unusual native deciduous beech. The park also provides a rich habitat for wildlife, including Tasmanian devils, quolls, platypus, echidna and several bird species. Dramatic Cradle Mountain is the rugged jewel of the park and can be seen from Dove Lake on a day visit. Take the two-hour walk around the lake or spend the day tackling Cradle Mountain's summit. There are also a variety of shorter walks that pass through beautiful old-growth rainforest. Weindorfer's Chalet is the rustic former home of Gustav and Kate Weindorfer and is the starting point for the world-famous Overland Track.

Beautiful scenery but mostly of huge trees as only a few views into the lake itself. As a taster, the figure 8 track is a very good mostly flat 2 hour walk - likely to see a platypus or 2 at Platypus Cove. This is one of the best lakes in Australia. When we were there, in February, the surface was like a mirror. The weather was warm and great for walks. The shoreline is lovely, with occasional sandy beaches and small green lawns that, I think, the wallabies must keep in check. Such a lovely setting to take children to see. We walked through forests and along the edge of the lake and took great shots. Chilly at night, so take a jumper or jacket. Beautiful lake with multiple walking options Love the wildlife and pristine forest environment Saw some echidnas and tried to spot the platypus living along the lake Good visitors centre with helpful staff Excellent accommodation and location, the Lake boat trip was a highlight. Poor options for eating both at LSC & Derwent Bridge people coming to this pristine location do not require a restaurant menu they need flexibility, a salad bar, sandwiches healthy snacks.
