The facilities is managed by Namibia Wildlife Resorts, and of high standard. There is a beautiful swimming pool, small kiosk, bar and restaurant area for guests. The camping site has very good and clean communal bathroom facilities, with good shading. Various hiking trails along, and to the top of the mountain could be done, and various game drives are available to guests, to see some of the rare wildlife species on the mountain. If you stay at the Park, keep your food locked away, room windows and car closed, as there are a few local baboon troops around and in the camp. The smallest antelope in Namibia; the Damara Dik-Dik is often seen between the chalets.

A small cemetery with the graves of German soldiers still lies at the foot of the Plateau. In 1908 a police post was built at Waterberg, and today the historic Rasthaus building houses a restaurant, bar and kiosk. In the early 1970s various endangered species were translocated here, with the area declared a nature reserve since 1972 in order to protect these animals. In 1989 black rhinos were moved to Waterberg Plateau Park from Damaraland (Kunene Region) and a breeding program initiated. The breeding program was an important success for black rhino conservation in Namibia and worldwide. The towering table mountain of Waterberg measures some 50 km in length and up to 16 km in width, forming a distinctive massif of sheer cliffs and interesting sandstone rock formations. Wildlife, Birds & Vegetation Waterberg Plateau National Park is noted for its populations of endangered animals, playing an important role in Namibian wildlife conservation. White and black rhino are protected here, as well as roan and sable antelopes.

On our first night we had the most expensive, but also the most disgusting meal we've ever had. For R280 we were served a luke-warm buffet meal. The steak was inedible because it was left in the bay marine so long that it cooled down and became tough. The mash potato was so dry and left so long in the bay marine that it formed a crush on top. The chicken dish was completely overcooked and the macaroni was not washed down with the result it was one sticky ball. We were once again expected to pay a R500 key deposit for a key that was left in the door of our chalet and the resort has no WiFi. This resort is a prime example of incompetent, disinterested and poorly skilled management that has filtered through to the rest of the personnel. The only good thing about this resort was the chalet, which was very nice and the shower head, which was the best we've ever will certainly never see us again and we will most certainly not recommend this resort to anybody. …

Flora and fauna [ edit] The vegetation of the plateau is green subtropical dry woodland. This contrasts the acacia that grows at the base of the plateau. Typically, the north slope of the rocky formations have colorful lichen growing on them in contrast to the reddish color normally found. There are approximately 200 species of birds in the park. It is home to the only breeding colony of Cape Vultures in Namibia. It is also the breeding ground of several rare game species including rhinoceros, buffalo, and sable and roan antelope. Climate [ edit] Like all of Namibia, it is very hot in the summer with temperatures of up to 40 °C. Get in [ edit] The main entrance to the park is at the Bernabe de la Bat Restcamp. Many trails extend outward from this restcamp. Fees and permits [ edit] Vehicles to view game leave in the early morning and mid afternoon. These are booked at the camp office and cost N$50 for adults and N$20 for children. The striking, flat-topped Waterberg Plateau rises up about 200m above the surrounding Omaheke plains in the northern region of central Namibia. This resort is a shame and disgrace to NWR's. Poorly managed and maintained. We arrived at the resort full of expectations, but were extremely disappointed to be met by the most surly and unfriendly reception staff we've met throughout Namibia. On arrival we were asked for our travel vouchers that were never sent to us. Next they couldn't find our booking and only succeeded in doing so after I collected the booking confirmation from my vehicle. We were then informed that our key was in the door of our chalet and when we arrived at the chalet found out why. The key could not be removed because the sliding door did not lock properly. I had to do some running repairs myself to be able to lock the door and remove the key. Then we found that a self drive up the mountain was not allowed, but a guided drive would cost R650 per person. R1, 300 for the two of us. Totally ridiculous and overpriced. The resort has quite a number of hiking trails, but the markings are so neglected that we got lost twice on the first afternoon.
Waterberg Plateau Park is located on the Waterberg Plateau in Otjozondjupa, Namibia. The nearest major city is Otjiwarongo, about 68 km to the west of the park by conventional roads. The park is 40, 549 hectares in area. Understand [ edit] History [ edit] The park was set aside as a sanctuary for rare and endangered species. A variety of antelopes were relocated from other regions of Northern Namibia. In 1989, black rhinoceros was reintroduced to the area from Damaraland. Some elderly overseas guests had to hike halfway up the mountain again because they got lost when they hiked back from the top. The hike up to the top of the mountain was worthwhile though because it provided us with some stunning views. The wooden bridges on some of the trails are so neglected that you cannot use them anymore and people had to make their own foodpaths around them. Next we found out that in the middle of summer the swimming pool was out of order with no sign of any urgent attention being given to the problem. We stayed for three extremely hot days and could never use the swimming pool. The resort is infested by baboons and it doesn't seem as if it bothers the resort management at all. No chalet or campsite can be left unattended. Our chalet did not have a plug for the basin, but although I have reported it on the first day by the time we left it was still not fixed. We understand that the resort does not have a problem with water, but its bothersome if hosepipes are left running and unattended for hours on end.
The Waterberg Park is part of the Central Namibia Plateau, and is situated 280 km north of the capital, Windhoek. The mountain get its name from many small springs on its lower slopes. The thick green vegetation the Waterberg is sharp contrasts with the surrounding Acacia-bush savannahs and plains. The plateau is one of Namibia's the most fascinating geological sites, with unique sights such as dinosaur tracks, and fossilized ancient dunes. Welcome to Waterberg Plateau Park The wild Waterberg is highly recommended – there is nothing quite like it in Namibia. It takes in a 50km-long, 16km-wide sandstone plateau, looming 150m above the desert plains. It doesn't have the traditional big wildlife attractions (such as lions or elephants). What it does have are some rare and threatened species, including sable and roan antelope, and little-known populations of white and black rhinos. Most animals here have been introduced, and after breeding successfully some are moved to other parks. That said, all of these species can prove difficult to see – most are skittish and the bush is very thick.
